Many parents believe that Montessori is only suitable for children who learn in a certain way, but Montessori education can be beneficial for all learning types. Montessori is all about learning visually, aurally, verbally, and through touch — so whatever your child’s preferred learning method, they will get something positive from a Montessori education. Children who learn by watching, as well as those who learn by repeating a task, can thrive in a Montessori environment.

Children Can Learn To Plan

Not all children are born with an innate ability to plan their day, but this is something that can easily be learned. While some children may require more guidance, others pick it up quickly. Whatever your child’s planning abilities, their teacher will be able to provide the appropriate amount of guidance to help them through the day.

What If My Child Needs To Move Around a Lot?

Montessori classrooms can be quiet, with children focused on their activities in a calm and still environment. However, movement is an essential part of a Montessori education. Children are encouraged to move around the classroom. Keeping still for too long can negatively impact their ability to learn. Self-directed learning in Montessori education allows your child to move around the classroom freely, as much (or as little) as they want.

Consider the Atmosphere at Home

One of the only stumbling blocks to whether a Montessori education is appropriate for your child is whether you’re willing to incorporate some of the elements into your home life. Children without any structure at home at all may feel too constrained in a Montessori classroom, whereas stricter homes that operate on a rewards system may make self-directed learning difficult for your child.

I am Glynis Hamilton, the owner of the Montessori School of Wellington. When I had my children I knew exactly what I wanted for them in terms of early childhood education. It was only when I visited a beautiful Montessori school in Toronto that I knew I had found what I was looking for. I became intrigued by Montessori and so, at the ripe old age of 44, I went back to school and then switched career from legal secretary to Montessori teacher. Since that time, Montessori has become a way of life for me. The past 20 years have been a joy rather than a job. I have moved from being front line in the classroom to the office doing more administrative work. But, my office door is almost always open to the classroom where I can hear the children’s laughter and welcome them in for a visit. I truly love what I do.
